What is an FR44 filing?

Direct Answer

An FR44 is an enhanced version of the SR22 used only in Florida and Virginia. It is required after a DUI conviction and mandates significantly higher liability coverage limits — $100,000 per person / $300,000 per accident / $50,000 property damage in Florida.

FR44 vs. Standard SR22

Both the FR44 and SR22 are Certificates of Financial Responsibility filed with the state. The critical difference is the coverage limits. A standard SR22 requires your state's minimum liability coverage. An FR44 requires much higher limits:

  • Florida FR44: $100,000 per person / $300,000 per accident bodily injury + $50,000 property damage
  • Virginia FR44: $100,000 per person / $200,000 per accident bodily injury + $50,000 property damage

These limits are significantly higher than Florida's standard minimums of $25,000/$50,000/$10,000, which is why FR44 insurance costs more than standard SR22 coverage.

When is FR44 Required

An FR44 is specifically required after DUI-related convictions in Florida and Virginia. In Florida, if your violation is not DUI-related (such as driving without insurance or excessive points), you would need a standard SR22 instead of an FR44.

The FR44 filing requirement lasts 3 years from the date of your license suspension in Florida, and 3 years from reinstatement in Virginia.
