Can I get a non-owner FR44 when an ignition interlock is required but I don't own a vehicle?
This is one of the trickier situations in FR44 insurance. You can carry non-owner FR44 coverage to satisfy the insurance filing requirement, but the ignition interlock requirement is separate — it applies to any vehicle you drive, and the device must be installed on that vehicle.
Two Separate Requirements
Florida's DUI penalties can include both an FR44 filing requirement and an ignition interlock device (IID) requirement. These are independent of each other:
- FR44 filing — An insurance requirement. A non-owner policy satisfies this.
- Ignition interlock — A vehicle requirement. The device must be installed on any vehicle you drive.
How It Works in Practice
If you don't own a vehicle but are required to have an ignition interlock, you can still get a non-owner FR44 policy. However, when you do drive — whether it's a borrowed vehicle, a family member's car, or any other vehicle — that vehicle must have an interlock device installed.
Some drivers in this situation choose to install the device on a family member's vehicle (with their permission) that they'll be driving. Others may need to arrange alternative transportation until the interlock requirement is satisfied.
