My FR44 requirement ends soon, but the carrier is quoting a 6-month policy. Do I have to pay the full term?

Direct Answer

Insurance policies are sold in standard terms (typically 6 or 12 months) regardless of how much FR44 time you have left. If your requirement ends mid-term, you can cancel the FR44 portion and either keep standard coverage or shop for a new non-FR44 policy. You should receive a prorated refund for the unused portion.

Why Terms Don't Match Your Requirement

Insurance policies run in 6-month or 12-month terms. Your FR44 requirement runs for 3 years from your suspension date. These almost never align perfectly. If you have 3 months left on your FR44 requirement, you'll likely still need to purchase a 6-month policy term.

What to Do When FR44 Ends Mid-Term

  1. Confirm with the DHSMV that your 3-year requirement is satisfied.
  2. Notify your carrier to stop the FR44 filing.
  3. Shop for standard coverage — You may find much lower rates without the FR44 surcharge.
  4. Cancel if switching — You should get a prorated refund for the remaining months on the old policy.

Don't overpay — the moment your FR44 requirement is satisfied, you should be shopping for standard rates. Call (855) 678-6977 when you're approaching the end of your FR44 period.
