How long do I need FR44 insurance in Florida?
Florida requires you to keep the FR-44 for 3 years from the date your driving privilege is reinstated. The filing must be continuous.
Florida’s 3-Year FR44 Requirement
The FR44 filing period in Florida runs 3 years from the date your driving privilege is reinstated — not from your arrest, conviction or suspension date. FLHSMV says: “The customer must maintain the FR-44 form for three years from the date of reinstatement of their driving privilege.” If your license was reinstated on January 15, 2026, your FR44 requirement runs until January 15, 2029, assuming no lapses.
The Clock Runs During BPO/Hardship
Good news: if you obtain a BPO (Business Purpose Only) or hardship license, the 3-year clock keeps running. You don’t need a fully reinstated license for the time to count — you just need to maintain continuous FR44 insurance coverage.
What Resets the Clock
Any lapse in your FR44 coverage can reset the 3-year period. Your carrier is required to notify the Florida DHSMV if your policy cancels, and the state may restart your filing requirement from scratch. Autopay is essential.
When FR44 Ends
After completing the full 3-year period with no lapses, contact the Florida DHSMV to confirm your requirement has been satisfied. You can then shop for standard auto insurance — you are no longer required to carry the higher FR44 limits.
