Arlington County SR22 & FR44 Insurance
Arlington County occupies just 26 square miles — one of the smallest counties in the United States by land area. But within those 26 square miles sit the Pentagon, Reagan National Airport, and a dense network of federal office buildings staffed by a workforce that commutes across three jurisdictions every day. If you live in Arlington and need an SR22 or FR44 filing, your daily reality probably involves crossing into Washington, D.C., or Maryland and back, often before lunch.
That cross-jurisdictional commute is not a footnote in your filing situation. It is the central complication.
The Multi-Jurisdiction Problem
Virginia, the District of Columbia, and Maryland each have their own financial responsibility filing requirements, their own minimum liability limits, and their own motor vehicle agencies. If your Virginia license was suspended and you need an SR22 or FR44, that filing goes to the Virginia DMV. But if you drive into D.C. or Maryland daily — on I-66, I-395, the George Washington Memorial Parkway, or the Key Bridge — you are operating in jurisdictions that may have their own insurance verification systems.
Here is what Arlington drivers need to understand:
- Your Virginia filing satisfies Virginia. The SR22 or FR44 is filed with the Virginia DMV and remains on record there for three years from your reinstatement date.
- D.C. and Maryland do not require a separate filing from out-of-state drivers for routine commuting — but if you were also cited in one of those jurisdictions, that jurisdiction may impose its own requirements independently.
- Federal property adds another layer. The Pentagon parking lots, Reagan National Airport, and the George Washington Memorial Parkway are federal property. Traffic offenses on federal land are handled in federal court (U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia), not Arlington County courts. A DUI on the GW Parkway is a federal case, but Virginia can still suspend your license and require an FR44 based on the conviction.

SR22 vs. FR44 in Arlington County
Virginia is one of two states that uses the FR44 filing. The type of filing you need depends entirely on the offense behind your suspension:
FR44 filing — required for DUI and all alcohol- or drug-related driving offenses. The minimum liability limits are far higher than a standard policy:
- $100,000 bodily injury per person
- $200,000 bodily injury per accident
- $50,000 property damage per accident
SR22 filing — required for non-DUI suspensions such as driving uninsured or excessive demerit point accumulation:
- $50,000 bodily injury per person
- $100,000 bodily injury per accident
- $25,000 property damage per accident
- These limits apply to policies effective on or after Jan. 1, 2025
Both filing types must be maintained continuously for three years from your reinstatement date. Any lapse — even a single day between policies — triggers automatic re-suspension by the Virginia DMV.
Public Transit During a Suspension
Arlington is one of the few places in Virginia where losing your license does not necessarily mean losing your ability to get to work. The county is served by Metrorail (five stations on the Orange, Silver, and Blue lines), Metrobus, ART (Arlington Transit), and a network of bike lanes and pedestrian paths that connect Rosslyn, Ballston, Crystal City, and the Pentagon City corridor.
If your license is currently suspended and you are waiting on your SR22 or FR44 to be filed, Metro can bridge the gap. And once you are reinstated and carrying your filing, you may find that a transit-heavy commute reduces your annual mileage — which some carriers factor into your premium. Tell your agent about your commute when you call.
Virginia's Uninsured Motor Vehicle Fee Has Ended
Virginia ended its uninsured motor vehicle fee on July 1, 2024. If you need an SR22 or FR44, the DMV requires you to carry an active insurance policy that meets the minimum limits for your filing type. There is no fee-based workaround.
Cost of SR22 and FR44 Insurance in Arlington
Whether there's an SR22 filing fee — and how much — is set by your insurance carrier. Some include the filing at no extra charge; others charge a small one-time fee. We'll tell you exactly what your carrier charges before you buy.
Arlington is a high-density, high-traffic area, and premiums here reflect that driving environment. Your rate will depend on your driving record, the filing type, your vehicle, and your coverage limits. FR44 filers carry higher premiums because the required limits are substantially higher. We quote multiple carriers to find the most competitive rate for your profile.
Frequently Asked Questions
I got a DUI on the George Washington Parkway. Is that a federal or state case?
It is a federal case — the GW Parkway is National Park Service land, and traffic offenses there are heard in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. However, the Virginia DMV can still suspend your driving privilege and require an FR44 filing based on that federal conviction. You will need to satisfy both the federal court's requirements and the Virginia DMV's filing requirement.
I commute to D.C. every day. Do I need a D.C. filing too?
If your license is a Virginia license and your suspension was ordered by the Virginia DMV, your SR22 or FR44 filing goes to Virginia. D.C. does not require a separate financial responsibility filing from out-of-state commuters in most cases. However, if you were also cited or convicted in D.C., that jurisdiction may impose its own requirements. Call us at (855) 678-6977 and we will help you sort out whether additional filings are needed.
Can I ride Metro instead of filing an SR22?
Using public transit does not remove your filing obligation. If the Virginia DMV has ordered you to file an SR22 or FR44, that requirement stays on your record for three years from your reinstatement date — whether you drive or not. You must file and maintain the insurance to clear the suspension from your record, even if you do not plan to drive during that period.
