How long does the state take to process an SR22?
Processing time depends on the state and how the SR22 is filed. Electronic filings — which is how we file every policy — are typically processed within one to three business days. Paper filings sent by mail can take two to four weeks. Some states are faster than others.
Electronic vs. Paper Processing
The filing method makes the biggest difference in how long you'll wait.
Electronic filings go directly from the insurance carrier to the state's motor vehicle agency through a secure data connection. There's no mail, no scanning, no manual data entry. The state's system receives the filing and matches it to your driver record automatically. Most states process these within one to three business days.
Paper filings are mailed by the insurance company to the state. The state has to receive the mail, open it, scan or manually enter the information, and match it to your record. This can take two to four weeks — and that's if nothing goes wrong. Lost mail, illegible forms, or data entry errors can add more time.
We file every SR22 electronically the same day you purchase your policy. That's the fastest path from purchase to processed.
What Can Slow It Down
Even with electronic filing, a few things can delay processing:
- Weekends and holidays — State agencies process filings on business days. A filing submitted Friday afternoon might not be processed until Monday or Tuesday.
- Mismatched information — If your name, date of birth, or license number on the SR22 doesn't match what the state has on file, processing stalls until it's corrected. This is why we verify your information carefully before filing.
- State backlogs — Some states process filings faster than others. A state with a higher volume of filings may take the full three business days, while a smaller state might process same-day.
- Outstanding requirements — The SR22 filing alone doesn't reinstate your license if you have other unmet requirements — unpaid fines, incomplete courses, or a waiting period that hasn't elapsed.
Checking Your Filing Status
Once your SR22 is filed, you can check whether the state has processed it through your state's DMV or motor vehicle agency. Most states let you check your license status online — when the filing is processed, your record will reflect it.
If you purchased your policy through us, you can also call us at (855) 678-6977. We can confirm the filing was transmitted and help you figure out next steps if processing seems delayed.
Don't drive until you've confirmed your license is reinstated. Having an SR22 filed doesn't automatically make your license valid — the state still needs to process the filing and complete any other reinstatement steps.
