If I switch SR22 carriers, do I get a refund from my old policy?

Direct Answer

Usually yes — if you've prepaid premium on your old policy (for example, paid 6 months upfront), you should receive a prorated refund for the unused portion when the policy cancels. The refund amount and timing depend on your carrier and how much of the term remains.

How Refunds Work

When you cancel a prepaid insurance policy, the carrier owes you the unused portion of the premium. If you paid for 6 months and cancel after 3, you should get roughly 3 months' worth back (minus any short-rate penalty some carriers charge for early cancellation).

Important: Don't Cancel Before the New Policy Is Active

The refund is secondary to continuity. Never cancel your old SR22 policy until:

  1. Your new SR22 policy is active
  2. The new SR22 certificate is filed with the state
  3. You've confirmed there's no gap between old and new

A gap of even one day triggers an SR-26 cancellation notice and can suspend your license. Get the switch right first — the refund will follow.
