What happens if my card expires and SR22 autopay fails?

Direct Answer

If your autopay fails — whether from an expired card, insufficient funds, or a bank change — your carrier will attempt to notify you. If payment isn’t received within the grace period, your policy cancels. Your carrier then files an SR-26 with the state, and your license gets suspended.

How to Prevent This

  • Update payment info immediately when you get a new card — don’t wait for the old one to expire.
  • Set calendar reminders for when your card expires.
  • Keep your carrier’s contact info accessible so you can update payment quickly.
  • Monitor your email — most carriers send failed payment notifications before canceling.

If It Already Happened

If your policy has already lapsed due to a failed payment, act immediately. The sooner you get a new policy in place and a new SR22 filed, the shorter the gap on record. In some cases, carriers can backdate coverage to close a short gap — but this isn’t guaranteed.
